First Listen: Platinum 96.7

Written Jun. 30, 2008 by Sean Ross in Terrestrial Radio with 124 Comments

By the time Citadel Country KTYS (the Texas Twister) Dallas became KPMZ (Platinum 96.7) this morning, the rough outline had been pretty well circulated -- Soft Oldies with the involvement of market legend Ron Chapman. KTYS' predecessor, KMEO, had done a similar format before as the flagship of an ABC Radio Networks syndicated format. Citadel also does a softer/older Oldies format on its WGVX (Love 105) Minneapolis and an older (but not softer) approach on its True Oldies Channel.

Chapman, as it turns out, is on-board as a consultant, but not part of the daily on-air schedule. That meant the first host heard this morning was Larry Dixon, like Chapman, a veteran of crosstown KVIL during its George John era. It was good hearing Dixon do that sort of Johns-ian brief personality again; (you can also hear that type of radio on long-time Oldies/Classic Hits outlet KLUV, one of the stations that KPMZ is aiming at). When Dixon played B.J. Thomas, he speculated on whether Thomas still lived in Dallas/Ft. Worth; by the next break, there was a call from a listener who knew where he lived.

Musically, Platinum 96.7 wasn't quite as deep or eclectic as Minneapolis, but was working from the same basic food groups: a few pre-Beatles oldies per hour, a few of the late '60s hits that have fallen off the radio in recent years, some softer early '70s music (Bread, Olivia Newton-John, and John Denver, but no Neil or Barbra in the stretch I heard), one softer '80s song. Less than 25% of the music overlapped with what you'd expect to hear on KLUV or most other '60s/'70s/'80s Oldies/Classic Hits outlets.

Here's Platinum 96.7 at 8:15 on its first morning:

Friend & Lover, "Reach Out Of he Darkness"
Bread, "Baby I'm-A Want You"
Supremes, "You Can't Hurry Love"
B.J. Thomas, "I Just Can't Help Believing"
Righteous Brothers, "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration"
Del Shannon, "Runaway"
England Dan & John Ford Coley, "We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again"
Chad & Jeremy, "Yesterday's Gone"
Glenn Frey, "The One That You Love"
Gary Puckett & Union Gap, "Lady Willpower"
FIfth Dimension, "One Less Bell To Answer"
Elvis Presley, "All Shook Up"
John Denver, "Annie's Song"
Dobie Gray, "Drift Away"
Monkees, "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"
Olivia Newton-John, "Let Me Be There"

I've been listening to this station today and I love it! I have been recommending this station to everyone!

2  Judy on July 1, 2008 11:13 AM

I am so glad to finally have a radio station that is once again playing the true "oldies" - not music from the 70's and 80's! We baby boomers still like to listen to music too. My only complaint is that the signal is not very good. I live in Terrell and the signal seems to come and go a lot. Any chance that it will get better?

3  Leah on July 1, 2008 12:28 PM

I just happened onto this station yesterday afternoon. Wow, this is great! Loved the morning stuff today. I drive from Bedford to Denton to work, a recent move from Nashville, TN. I'm glad to find a station that plays oldies and actually plays the music instead of talking all the time. Please boost the signal!
Thanks!

4  Diane on July 2, 2008 8:06 AM

WELCOME! I'm so glad this station is on the air. I agree with Judy lovin' the true "oldies". Give it up for all the "boomers".

5  cecilia on July 2, 2008 9:35 AM

an afternoon dj on KLUV told me i'd never hear true oldies from Gene Pitney or Bobby Vee's The Night Has a Thousand Eyes or Sealed With a Kiss from Brian Hyland because i was INVISIBLE...an over-fifty demographic with no power!
now i don't need to listen to KLUV anymore...we've got Platinum 96.7...hooray for Larry Dixon and Ron Chapman!

6  Roger Bopp on July 2, 2008 10:05 AM

Thanks Ron, Larry, Gail, Vic, Wendi, and Angie. 96.7 KPMZ is now my "Go-To" station for istening enjoyment.

7  Gwyn on July 2, 2008 12:17 PM

Hey Dallas/Ft. Worth,

Ron Chapman is alive and well. LOVE the new music format and hearing Ron again. It's the breath of fresh air we so long for again in Texas.
Keep up the great work!

I ran into Ron in the airport a few weeks ago and he looks as fit as ever. It thrills me that he is involved in Radio again and especially in Dallas. I listened to him for all of the 45 years that he was here. I really like Jody Dean - but the rest of the day I will be listening to 96.7. It is great to hear Larry Dixon again - but for this moment - I will stick to Jody and his crew.

Thank you, Ron for bringing back a station that you can listen to all day long!

9  Disappointed Twister Fan on July 3, 2008 1:26 AM

Went to listen to my fav station this morning and found oldies crap! Bye bye 96.7. RIP Twister, you'll be greatly missed.

10  Marcia on July 3, 2008 12:40 PM

Is this new station available online? What is the website? It keeps going back to The Twister and I want to read up on Platinum and see if I can get it online. Anyone know?

11  al jarrell on July 3, 2008 3:11 PM

Well, you've done the airwaves "REAL GOOD"!!!
I listened the very first day and your choices are excellent. I am now leaving it on all day. Every piece is perfect and takes me back to those songs I truly enjoyed more than at any other time. Please do not experiment too far outside your current parameters. If you try too much you may lose what you have. I am leaving you "soldered" to my radio dial!!!!! Jody may get a few of my early morning minutes just before I click back to you guys!!!

What Time is The Funeral ?

I was finally glad that another Oldies Station finally came into existence, beside K-LUV, which continues to play the same, old tired retread songs of Elton John, and a few various other performers to say the least. IF you have the audacity to call up one of the DJs there, & request a true, blue, Golden-Oldie, i e = Dion = " Runaround Sue " = that DJ ( particularly = John Summers = aka = The self-proclaimed "Almighty of THE peon, DJs, ) will literally laugh at you by telling you that that particular real, true-blue Oldie, is " NOT ON THEIR PLAY-LIST, " because it is too old of a song for them to play!!!
Now that Platinum 96.7 finally came into existence, & is playing those real, true-blue, Golden-Oldies, I hear nothing but " Elevator-Music " with your now, given " Oldies, - Easy Listening " Format. PA-LEEZ, GIVE ME A BREAK! Once again, " What Time is The Funeral, " so you can continue to put us to sleep, with your constant playing of " Oldies = " Elevator-Music " ? You have missed a " golden opportunity " here to finally play, real, true-blue Golden-Oldies ( i e = Chuck Berry, Dion, Lesley Gore, The Grass Roots, Tommy James & The Shondells, Early Beatles, Beach Boys, etc, etc ). YOU GET THE PICTURE, HERE, DUH, I HOPE! YOU NEED TO " PUNCH-IT-UP " ON YOUR PLAYLIST NOW, &STOP PLAYING Oldies = " Elevator-Music ", or else you will be driving us EX- K-LUV Listeners away, & back to the same old, crap that K-LUV keeps playing!!!
I am not a DJ, nor have I ever been in radio, but I CAN BET YOU ANYTHING, THAT IF I WERE THE NEW, PROGRAM DIRECTOR THERE, I COULD TURN THAT STATION AROUND, & BLOW K-LUV OUT OF THE WATER, WITH A TRUE, GOLDEN-OLDIES FORMAT, THAT ROCKS THE OLDIES' WORLD, WITH GREAT SONGS THAT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD & FORGOTTEN ABOUT IN OVER 30 YEARS !!!

An Ex-K-LUV listener, & soon to be = Ex- Platinum 96.7 listener, if you continue to play Old,Old, Oldies " Elevator " - Easy Listening Music !!!

Wow,what a terrible thing to do!Taking off the best country station(The Twister) we've ever had for oldies, what a load of ______!!!

14  Laura on July 3, 2008 7:47 PM

I read about Platinum in the paper and tuned there the next morning. I converted my nieces (8, 11 and 21) and my brother and sister-in-law. I've long been a Ron Chapman fan from the old KLIF days. Even tho Ron won't be on the air, the music is great and I will continue to tell everyone.

15  shirley on July 4, 2008 1:04 PM

Just found you yesterday! What a wonderful surprise. Your music takes me back to many memories and people that I have not thought about for a long time.
You are on every radio in my house, car and back porch. Keep up the good work and I will keep listening.

16  John on July 4, 2008 4:50 PM

Thank goodness for the return of Ron Chapman's taste in music...it is exactly what I want to hear. I may be the only one but I have tired of KLUV's morning "star" and his ego, religious views, family stories and 'yuck-it-up' stooges that blasts from his bully pulpit daily.

Thanks for giving us an alternative Oldies format that hits the spot to my ear. Now, can you boost the signal strength...here in Mesquite you are coming in a bit weak.

17  Shirley on July 4, 2008 4:53 PM

I happened on your station 7/2/08 and am absolutely thrilled to have done so! The music variety is wonderful, outstanding, and AM SOOOOO HAPPY to again have an unchatty station that plays such wonderful music. Our dental office now listens to it in our operatories. Please don't change a thing! IT'S GREAT!!!!!!!!

18  Patti on July 4, 2008 4:53 PM

I have really been enjoying this station...then I heard Ron Chapman's voice and figured out the the "platinum" name must be a reference to the color of Ron's hair--if he had any!

19  Jay on July 4, 2008 7:33 PM

**** Great ****
This is what KLUV could have been.
It is a pleasure to NOT hear the same 'oldie' four times in the same day. After all, how many Top 50 hits were there in the 50's, 60's, and 70's?
There is one button on my car radio and my whole house audio system set for 96.7 !

20  Sue Adams on July 5, 2008 1:57 PM

Ron..so good to hear your voice again, even on promos. And Larry, what a blast from my past. I love your new station. You know, me I'm a "Country" girl but Terry and the gang will have to wait a bit while I overdose with you guys. Shades of the bygone days at KVIL.

22  Beverly on July 6, 2008 12:20 AM

Was thrilled to hear Ron Champman was involved with the birth of a new "Oldie" station. This station is fonominal. I'm so impressed. As a "Baby Boomer", the '50's, 60's and early 70's are my music. Since I've been listening to 96.7 I've heard songs that I never would have heard on other so called oldie stations, thanks. As long as you keep up your promise to play music, not talk I'll be happy. Keep up the good work and I will spread the word to anyone who will listen.

23  Walt Sammon on July 6, 2008 6:43 PM

Since Rock n'Roll in NYC began on the
streetcorners, bathrooms and especially
in Grand Central Terminal with Groups
who sang Accappella behing cigar boxes
conveniently located for donations. Why not have an hour or two devoted to the original StreetCorner sounds that spawned the Belmonts, Pursuasions, Nutmegs, Regents, Salutations and others too numerous to name. Slow music in the Summer and Fast music in the Winter (what a Plan!) There is a vast history that just has to be tapped
especially with the influx of Naturlized texans like myself from NYC, Chicago, Philadelphis. Check out the song by the Pursuasions where they are looking for a sound.
Thanks.

24  Cherilyn on July 7, 2008 8:40 AM

Came across the station by accident on Sunday and just went nuts!!!! I am so excited to hear this music now that KLUV isn't playing it anymore! Was also glad to hear Ron's voice again! Have called everyone that can pick this station up and told them!!! Yeah for all of us!!!!

25  Irene on July 7, 2008 2:57 PM

I couldn't find my "Twister", but what I found - "Platinum" is absolutely the GREATEST! I got so sick of both the county and the oldies channels playing the same 30 songs over and over again. Your variety is WONDERFUL! Thanks so much!

26  JoRod on July 8, 2008 10:17 PM

I agree with the others that have posted positive comments.
I would often call in to KLUV during Debbie Diaz lunchtime request hour and was told that stuff like Gene Thomas "Sometime" and Troy Shondell's "This Time" sounded "OLD".

I replied, "Well, you bill yourself as an "Oldies" station why don't you play real oldies from the '60s. But they didn't buy my logic.
If I asked for "Talk To Me" by Sunny Ozuna (who actually made it all the way to sing on American Bandstand) they would put me on permanent hold.

As far the demographics of who listens to what and buys what is advertised, they miss the boat completely.
Anyone who attended Ron Chapman's KLUV Oldiesfest in Grand Prairie or at Gilley's saw what the purchasing power of the Boomer generation is. I graduated Class of 1964 in Fort Worth and up till had been listening to Mineral Wells KMQX 88.5 online. Now they KNOW what the boomers like to listen to.
Now my radio is set to Platinum.

27  Jerry Baugh on July 9, 2008 11:02 AM

Thanks for the new format. I have it on my pre sets now. I am so tired of trying to listen to music on FM radio, only to hear incessant talk, tired jokes, etc. (Are you listening KLUV and Jodie Dean?) I really like your playlist and will be listening from now on!

28  Judy on July 9, 2008 1:41 PM

HOORAY for Platinum 96.7! They are playing True Oldies and I love spending my mornings with Larry Dixon. After Ron Chapman left KLUV, the Morning Show consisted of too many people whose *jobs* seemed to be nothing more than laughing at everything Jody Dean said or being as sarcastic as possible (i.e., Kathy Jones). I stopped listening after one week because I want to hear MUSIC! Unfortunately, the only alternative I found was 88.5 Mesquite Schools Radio, but their format is 70s. Unlike Jim I enjoy hearing the *Elevator Music* -- Everybody Loves Somebody, Moon River, Theme From a Summer Place, etc. I am thoroughly enjoying some wonderfully true Oldies and often find myself asking, “when was the last time I heard that one?”

KEEP IT UP, and thank you, thank you, thank you for offering us an alternative to the “new” KLUV.

29  Dutch on July 11, 2008 9:07 AM

This station is fantastic! I have it in my office, car and home. Thank you Ron Chapman and company once again! Fantastic, can't say enough good things!

Thank you!

30  The Horn on July 11, 2008 10:57 PM

I agree 100% with all the EX - KLUV jocks. I hated that drive to work with Jodie Dean & the LaughMatics. Now, no more tense times listening to smooth 96.7. It's a real pleasure to hear from Ron Chapman. I 2nd the notion from Dutch & Judy - Keep Up the Great Job, ya'll are fantastic. Word of mouth will quickly bring you to #1 in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. I do have to agree with one thing - Boost You Signal Wattage. I want to hear you all over North Central Texas, and so do a lot of other people...

The Horn

31  Rich on July 12, 2008 1:47 PM

An improvement over KLUV, but it could be so much better. Bobby Darin gets played, but only Mack the Knife. What about Dream Lover, Lazy River, Artificial Flowers, etc? Have yet to hear anything by Connie Francis, or Little Darlin by the Diamonds, and does anyone realize that Gene Pitney is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Try this one sometime - Young Love by Sonny James or anything by Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon.
I guess being born in 1945 puts me out of the desired demographic, but I do have a captive audience. My "retirement job" is driving a bus route in Denton. This past week I have been playing 96.7 on the bus's radio and have gotten several positive comments. But by far the most appreciated music is when I occasionally play my 50's and 60's personal CDs on the bus. Some of the riders anticipate their time on the bus just to enjoy the music. Rather than hearing "Hooked on a Feeling" by B.J. Thomas for the second time in an eight hour shift, how about spicing it up with "Tallahassee Lassie", "Transistor Sister", or "Palisades Park" for a change.

32  Reg on July 13, 2008 12:38 AM

Love the new Platinum 96.7!!!! Between this great new station and 770AM KAAM, I can get all the variety I want and a terrific selection of songs!!

33  Pamela Stroud on July 13, 2008 4:01 PM

We have enjoyed another station of oldies for years, but due to recent changes, it wasn't the same and certainly not as enjoyable. I read about this station beginning the new format and about Ron Chapman, and I just had to try it. My husband and I are really enjoying it tremendously!!! If I am not listening to a talk show, I am listening to y'all. I am enjoying the oldies so very much! Thank you for this format and for hiring Ron. Also, the higher ups, we older people just aren't that dumb! We really do enjoy great music. There are even tunes you can understand, and wow...the words can even be understood!!!!!!!!

34  Penny on July 13, 2008 10:53 PM

FINALLY!!! Oldies that I can relate to as a baby-boomer. Just discovered ths station last wk and it's been on my car radio constantly ever since. My kids think it's hilarious that Mom sings to every song. For those missing Twister, there are plenty of great Country/Western stations from which to choose. And Ron Chapman...well, his name is synonomous w/anything this classy. Don't change a thing, esp. the low/no chat. Wonderful assortment. Can't tell you enough that it's way cool. You have me!

35  Debra on July 14, 2008 8:58 AM

What a great station! I have missed real oldies for such a long time - thanks for bringing them back! The deejays are great, too! It's nice to have have more music and none of the prattle that isn't as entertaining to the listener as it is to the radio personalities who perceive themselves to be comedic performers and the voice of what's right and wrong in the world (puhleeze!!! we can think for ourselves!)Anyway - thank you, thank you, thank you!

36  Loretta on July 14, 2008 11:45 AM

What a sweet relief !! I was told by a friend about 96.7 and I had to check it out. Finally!!! Some decent music that doesn't rattle your car speakers. I love it !! Also, hearing Larry Dixon's voice again was just an absolute treat and this will be my station from now on. KVIL just ruined their station with the same old format over and over and the giggling silliness of their morning show. Jody, love him, but you need something to refresh your program as it is getting stale. Thanks Ron for your insight in bringing us back to the true good oldies. Don't pay any attention to those blow hards as they are just whiney butts. We have waited for this type of station for some time and I hope you keep it up. Great job !!!

37  Anne Biggs on July 15, 2008 10:04 AM

The radio has always been my companion on my l-o-n-g drive from Arlington into N. Dallas everday and used to love listening to Ron Chapman, then later Jody Dean. KLUV seems to have forgotten we listen for the music and the couple of hours of glory their early am DJ gets is not enough to have me listening the rest of the day. It's about the MUSIC! And....theirs is tired stuff! And how about the disrespect for us "oldies" (and buying power!)so Ivoted with my dial and switched to 96.7 the first time I heard it. Please don't go away, and thanks for making my morning, and afternoon, commute pleasurable again. I even sing now on my way to work.

"Oldie but Goodie"

38  jerry on July 15, 2008 12:12 PM

Finally!! Just want to say I think you have the best selection of songs I have heard in years and everyday you station takes me back to a time I love and miss and my comute is now a little more enjoyable1 Thanks!!

Going in this morning to work, from Krum to Lewisville, as the beautiful sunrise in pinks and blues shown down upon Texas, heard the Beatles "Hear comes the Sun". So classic Chapman type feel, the feeling which has been sadly missed for so long. Welcome back Mr. Chapman. We all appreciate your extreme musical talents.

We stumbled across this station while hanging out around the pool on the 4th of July weekend. We didn't realize that it was so new. We've added it to our selection buttons on both of the car radios. We've followed Ron Chapman through the Sumpn else times and through various other stations. It's great hearing his voice again and how appropriate to the music format. I still love the morning show at KLUV, but after that, it goes to 96.7. It's also great hearing Larry and Gail! Great format! I really did grow up with this music and it's really nice to fine a station that's not afraid to play the Carpenters! Keep up the good work!
Rhonda

43  Bill on July 19, 2008 12:52 AM

Someone told me about 96.7 on Monday and I've enjoyed the music so far. What scares me is when I found out ron chapman is connected with it I started fearing he'd come in and screw it up with stupid drivel instead of good music. I used to listen to 98.7 till chapman and his clones screwed it up. I've been around the Fort Worth/Dallas area long enough to know to usually avoid anything connected with chapman, I didn't even like Something Else. I'll listen till it goes stupid.

44  Madeleine on July 19, 2008 5:36 PM

totally agree with Anne...my daughter told me about 96.7 and I said "no way"..I'm a devoted KLUV listener...but...when I flipped to 96.7 I heard lots of songs KLUV just doesn't play anymore...great variety...more music, less talking and no big ego DJ in the morning...and then I started hearing Ron's voice and I thought...yep, should have known Ron Chapman had something to do with this awesome station...hope you guys stay around...

Always love my oldies!

45  Kenneth on July 22, 2008 1:53 PM

Two years ago I sent an email to the programing director at KLUV and told him I knew what time of day it was by what Beatles or Beachboys song was playing. I asked him why they didn't play some of the other great songs for the 50's 60's, and 70's. He said that the listener demographic required that they play the songs they play. I told him this listener demographic was moving on. I accidentally tuned in 96.7 while trying to tune in 96.3. I haven't changed the station in a week. This station is great.

46  Lisa on July 24, 2008 9:49 AM

Yes! finaly some good oldies which includes Motown back on the radio. I am switching from KLUV, where they play the same songs over and over and over, well you get what I mean. I tuned in accidently yesterday and have not changed the station since.

47  Linda on July 24, 2008 1:10 PM

I'm so glad I found this station! I used to be a fan of Memories 96.7 before the Twister took it over. I was heartbroken!!! Now if seems as if the concept has been resurrected! Funny thing is, I'm not a baby boomer...I'm a child of a babyboomer!!! I'm 30 but grew up with my parents always listening to KLUV, but since now KLUV plays some 80's music (and I refuse to recognize 80's as being "oldies" because it makes me feel old) I enjoy listning to real oldies! Thank you! Funny thing: My kids hear some of the songs and play "name that tune" associating it with movies they watch! "Candy Girl" and "Here comes the Sun" are associated with Bee Movie, almost any Elvis song with Lilo and Stitch, "So Happy Together" Shrek, "Have you Ever Seen the Rain" Evan Almighty! My kids have good music taste I think! I keep my work radio and car radio tuned in and tell everyone I know about the station. Most of my peers think I'm crazy rocking out to Manilow and Streisand, but oh well!

48  Lynn Harransky on July 24, 2008 3:43 PM

Love ya after tuning in for 1 hour! It's so nice to listen to memorable oldies that a babyboomer can relate to!! I've got you tuned in everywhere I go. Bye-bye KLUV and ipod - HELLO 96.7 PLATINUM. Lynn
P.S. Can you boost you signal up

I was searching for something new and found you in early July. EVERY time I turn on the radio I hear a song to make me smile. I love the new Platinum! I am telling all my friends. Got any bumper stickers yet?

Donna

51  Susie on July 28, 2008 10:44 AM

I am so pleased with this station. I love the music! Please keep playing all of the songs. I am so tired of the same old 5 Beatles and Stones songs. You have such good variety of music. There are so many good songs to play. Please keep playing them. I loved hearing Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, the Carpenters, along with the oldies no one else will play!! It has been wonderful! I've told everyone I know about your station. It's so nice to hear Ron and Larry again...thank you so much.

52  Sam on July 28, 2008 5:18 PM

I would take KLUV off my radio if you had more power. I live in Terrell---the further east I go the weaker the signal. To me oldies means 50's and 60's

53  Dave on July 29, 2008 3:42 PM

Love the station! Please keep expanding the play list. There are thousands more great songs out there that we haven't heard yet. For example, I was delighted to hear Scarborough Fair and I Am a Rock, but how about adding Hazy Shade of Winter, At the Zoo, America, The Dangling Conversation, Patterns...

54  sherry on July 29, 2008 6:14 PM

I LOVE PLATINUM 96.7 AND IT IS GREAT TO HEAR RON CHAPMAN'S VOICE AGAIN. K LUV HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE HE LEFT. I LISTEN TO YOUR STATION DAILY BUT THE SIGNAL SEEMS TO FADE OUT AROUND 2 PM.

55  JoanneC on July 30, 2008 9:25 AM

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!! Don't change a thing.... you have the best oldies radio station in the DFW area ever.... Thanks all of you from KVIL; it's great to hear you back. And thanks Citadel. Again just keep it just like it is!!!! You are an answer to prayer. Joanne

56  Karin on July 30, 2008 1:46 PM

GREAT STATION!!! LOVE Larry Dixon. Now just need Ken Barnett back to have the total package!!!

57  Cindy Brown on July 30, 2008 3:07 PM

I enjoy listening to some of the older hits from the sixties that I don't get to hear on the stations playing the hits latest hits .

58  Beverly on July 31, 2008 12:39 PM

I was told about this station by a "country" music fan who was not happy about the death of "The Texas Twister". I love it--great station and the baby boomers don't have a station. Most are either country, full of rap music, Brittany Spears, Jessica, etc. (gag). Now we do--thanks for thinking of us that were born in the 40s and 50s. The 1950s and 60s are my favorite decades of music! Love hearing Ron's voice again.

59  Karlyn on July 31, 2008 3:14 PM

It is so good to hear songs that have been stored in my brain for a lllllooonnggg time. I've been out of high school for 40 years, but these songs bring back alot of wonderful memories of those days. I would appreciate a little more of those Motown tunes like Little Anthony & the Imperials, Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell (Your Precious Love), the Temps, O'Jays and the Four Tops. Enjoying listening!

60  Susie on August 1, 2008 9:35 AM

I can hardly believe that I heard in the last couple of days, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, the Mama's and the Papa's (other than the only 2 songs anyone else will play) as well as Dionne Warwick, Lou Christie...I love your station. I have never listened to a radio station at work, but I put yours on every day. Please don't change. It is so nice to hear all of these wonderful songs. Thank you.

61  Joe Ravioli on August 1, 2008 1:44 PM

Platinum 96.7; welcome, welcome, welcome to the D/FW radio spectrum! I too, was a fan of Memories 96.7 (KMEO). When they went country; to put it mildly, I was very disappointed. After all, how many country stations does the D/FW area need? There were puh-LENTY enough before that format change. Glad to hear that someone finally came to their senses! This format has been sorely missed. Like some of the other listeners, I was burned out on KLUV with their repetitious (and inflexible) playlist. It's also great to know that Ron Chapman is on board. He knows what the people want, and if they'll let him run with it, he'll give it to them, even though he's not on the air. It's also great to hear Larry Dixon & Gail Lightfoot again! Echoes of the long-gone halcyon days of the KVIL era! The only bone I have to pick is the signal strength, but I've heard that's being taken care of, too. Keep up the good work; this is going to be a great station! KLUV is going to be looking over their shoulder real quick! Thanks again!

62  Nancy on August 2, 2008 5:28 PM

Ever since Memories left the air a few years ago, I quit listening to the radio. Too much loud music all the time. But NOW that I have found Platinum 96.7, I'm in love with the radio again. Its on in my car and I listen all day at work. Thank you so much for bringing back the "good" music to radio. Ron Chapman is the best and as long as he's involved with this station, it will live forever! Thanks again for coming to the DFW area!

63  TJ on August 3, 2008 12:10 AM

Now I have to get the radio in my car fixed.... Heard your station for the first time Aug 2nd - I was driving my husbands car back from the casino in OK, came across Platimum 96.7 and smiled all the way back to Plano!!! I've got ya on my alarm clock, you're web broadcast address is in my favorites, and I can't wait to hear your morning DJ's I'll be tuning in!
Thanks!

64  Bob Johnson on August 4, 2008 3:49 PM

WOW its great to be home again!...I was away for 13 years and having grown up with Ron,Mitch and the crew at KVIL,it was truly homecoming when I Hit 96.7 and heard all the magic of the old days..
all you need now is Suzie doing locals again....
I am soo glad to be in Texas again and Definitely
good to hear Platinum 96.7....It is all over my house and I have converted almost all my neighbors
up here in Bowie!
thank you so much!

65  Dottie Hashman on August 5, 2008 3:58 AM

Awesome!!!!!! That is the word I would use to
discribe KPMZ Platinum 96.7 radio....
Love the Format, and love all the oldies...
Would'nt it be terrific, if we could have one of the "Best", air personaltys along with all the " Great",music???? Of course that is " Chuck
Brinkman", He is very versatile musicly, has a wonderful extroverted personalty, Is truly a "Great," entertainer, and he certainly knows what he is doing when he is on the air, as he has had many, many years to back him up...
Chuck, would certainly complement, Platinum
96.7, with his musical knowledge and showmenship.
Chuck has many fans out there, more then can be counted....and it would be nice to have him back full time in radio....
Hopefully that place will be, Platinum 96.7.
We will be looking forward to enjoying hearing him daily, once again.
Thanks,
Dottie

66  Dottie Hashman on August 5, 2008 4:04 AM

WELCOME BACK RON CHAPMAN !!!!!!!!!
GREAT JOB !!!!!!
Dottie

67  pam on August 5, 2008 3:38 PM

Love the station, but the signal is really bad. I drive from Corsicana to Midlothian to work and the station comes and goes. Mostly it goes, I would love to be able to listen all the way to & from work. I am an avid KSCS listener, but would love to listen to 96.7.

68  dee on August 6, 2008 4:27 PM

Just heard about your station today. Love it!!! Good to hear Ron's voice again. Keep playing the 50's & 60's. Couldn't stand Jody Deen & crew so I left KLUV. You have me hooked. Get a stronger signal!!!!!

69  Susie on August 7, 2008 11:30 AM

I have been a follower of Ron Chapman for over 40 years.First knew him from Big State Record Dist.
A wonderful , wonderful man !
I knew at some point that his love for oldies would some day surface the air waves. And here he is.... God Bless you Ron!

The only thing I would like to add is could we please hear a little more DO- WOP !
Coasters,Five Satans ,maybe just a little more older stuff.Maybe have a Saturday night Do-Wop evening.
Keep it up guy's I listen 24-7.
Susie

70  Russ on August 7, 2008 9:16 PM

I had given up on radio...until you guys fired up Platinum 96.7. It's great! Don't change a thing.1

71  Carla on August 11, 2008 9:38 AM

I missed listening to Larry Dixon in the mornings. I am so happy he's back!!!!

72  Sal on August 12, 2008 4:17 PM

Re-programmed the radio in my car, at home, at work, & on my treadmill to 96.7! Can you turn up the power? Sometimes the signal fades here in Keller.
Luvya man!

73  Raymond Crawford on August 12, 2008 5:56 PM

When I moved to Chicago in 1988 I left Ron Chapman and alot of radio memories. Now that I'm back in Dallas it's good to hear Ron's voice again. It's like chicken fried steak and mash potatoes for the ears! Thanks Ron for sticking around. You are the best and only the best gets better with age.

74  Belinda on August 14, 2008 8:26 PM

It's so nice to have a radio station to listen to while on the way to workand back home that actually plays good music. I love the music. Used to listen to KLUV when Ron Chapman did the morning show. Now it sounds more like a radio talk show with very little music. Thank you so much Ron Chapman for bringing back the music.

75  Mel on August 22, 2008 2:00 PM

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to find this station! I had it preset on my car radio and accidentally went to it to find Twister was gone and Platinum was in. What a relief! As a result, my home radios and work radios are all set on 96.7. This is music that really takes me back to the best of times--the best years, and all the memories that go along with the music. It brings me real comfort and peace of mind to revisit these songs and that part of my life. Thanks so much! Welcome back, Ron!!

76  Susan on August 23, 2008 7:14 PM

I found the station by reading articles about Ron Chapman on the internet; I was wondering what Ron was up to these days, and found the new station. I've been telling everyone about it. I absolutely love it and it's nice to hear Ron's voice on the radio again.

77  RON STONE on August 27, 2008 8:57 AM

Thanks for the opportunity to reminisce. You've taken me and my wife back to the good old days of Ron Chapman in Dallas. We're loving every minute of it. Welcome back Ron!

78  Peggy on August 28, 2008 12:11 AM

Really enjoy your station and sure glad I found it. Really enjoy the music especially when you play Barry Manilow and Barry White. Keep up great music format. Would be great to have Chuck Brinkman back. Do miss Sandy Sharp from KLUV. But I am hooked on 96.7. Thanks!!!!

79  Susie Miller on August 28, 2008 5:00 PM

Ok kids some of these songs we are staring to hear everyday. I can almost pin point the time I am going to hear Annie's song, wedding bell blues.

sounding too much like KLUV. Please play more do-wap!

80  Plano's Billy Bob on August 29, 2008 11:50 AM

What I appreciate more than anything else is you guys play three times as many songs without commercials than any other station in the metroplex. That gives us less interruptions so you can play the wonderful songs that you do hour after hour!!! I've had a hard time finding your listener line number. Please forward it to me.
THANKS for bringing back some great memories from my late 60's rock band ("The Chicago Fyre")era!!!!!

81  Cindy on August 30, 2008 5:12 PM

As a former KVIL listener and current KLUV listener, your station was recommended by a friend, and the word is spreading fast! Goodbye Jody. Welcome back, Ron. We missed you and the music you played. We love the soft oldies, and if that makes us old than so be it!

82  tony villegas on September 2, 2008 4:12 PM

I said it..."UNFORGETABLE MUSIC HEAVEN/96.7". I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO HAVE THEM ADD "CHARRIOTS OF FIRE" AND "MUSIC BOX DANCER" TO THEIR ALREADY FANTABULOUS INVENTORY OF MOOD AND MEMORIES.

83  Debbie Baker on September 15, 2008 12:55 PM

I found you my accident driving from Oklahoma back to Dallas and it has stayed on my radio since then and that was a month ago. So glad I dound you and especially was thrilled to hear Larry Dixon's wonderful personality is a definite plus!! But to find out my friend, Ron Chapman's voice felt like I had come home again! Miss him but am glad he is involved in this. Love the music and such a refreshing wonderful mix of the Oldies. Oldies that were filed away are now here again. All we need now is Suzie Humpreys fo make a surpise morning visit with Ron, Larry and we would definitely have our crew back. Need Ken Barnett to complete the package. Thank you for letting me enjoy music I grew up with!

84  Dottie Hashman on September 17, 2008 2:15 AM

96.7 Platinum is the only station I know that plays " The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", by Gladys Knight and the Pips and that song has very much meaning to me and am so glad I can hear it on Platinum....
There are so many beautiful songs to be heard on your station... Thank you.

85  MARTIN LOVETT on September 23, 2008 11:10 PM

I LOVE YOUR STATION..LETS PLAY SOME GOOD OLD DOO WOP....JOHNNY MAESTRO AND HIS CRESTS..THE CAPRIS..THE MYSTICS...DION AND THE BELMONTS...SO ON .THIS IS THE BEST STATION I HAVE HEAR IN TEXAS.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND GOOD LUCK YOU GOT MY VOTE......

86  George Hudspeth on October 15, 2008 8:24 AM

I work way out in the middle of nowhere--Chico, Tx. This is a great addition to my work day. Yall are in my car, home and place of work. Thanks for an everyday uplifting experience. I just hope that yall play lots of holiday music as well, then it will be the perfect station.
Thank you for what has been done

87  mike on October 15, 2008 11:01 AM

I like the positive nature of your station. I never hear anti-American songs like "American Woman". Neither do I hear pro-Americans songs either such as "Ballad of the Green Berets", but I'm still hoping. I've heard you mention that you play Buddy Holley even though I've never once heard you play him. I'll keep listening to see.

88  mike on October 15, 2008 11:05 AM

I have a question. Where is the advertisers link?
I was trying to contact an advertiser heard on your station. Also, did I not hear the AM DJ make a pro obamma comment the other day? Dallas is a conservative city which will be reflected in your listenship. I assure you most of us have no use for that radical.

89  janice on October 18, 2008 11:35 AM

I found your station this past week and it's WONDERFUL !!! It has the best mix of oldies I've ever heard on radio.
I've already put my best friend on to this !!! She was delighted to find it too.
I'm not surprised Ron Chapman is involved, he's the best.

90  Dixie on October 26, 2008 9:10 PM

A listener of 103.7, 98.7, now 96.7. Recently found this station with music I can relate too. When I heard Larry's voice and then Ron's, I knew I had found family.

91  Pam on November 5, 2008 11:34 PM

I agree with most of the comments; found the station by accident when KLUV was on the fritz at work. I do like your station better and have enjoyed hearing more "real" oldies, but noticed after just a few weeks that the same oldies are played daily. That's what other stations do and I was hoping for even more variety. As much as I love Mathis & Manilow, they have more than 3-4 songs on their albums. Same with all the other groups from the 50's and 60's, like Rich said. I wasn't surprised that Ron Chapman is involved. I'm a 1964 graduate and we had him at a school dance in the early 60's when he was going by his previous "radio name". Thanks again. Pam

92  Mike on January 25, 2009 12:44 PM

I have been in the DFW area all my life and listened to many different radio stations all the way back to when FM wasn't popular. Some might remember when KFJZ & KXOL were the two big rock and roll stations on AM; I went to high school with Danny Moffet on KXOL. I have grown up listening to Ron Chapman through his career in the DFW area, always enjoying the whole Ron Chapman Team. The new Platiumn 96.7 has been a great addition to the FM lineup. One of the things I like most about your new station is the varity of great songs played. In reading comments of others, great songs that we havn't heard in many years. It seems to me KLUV plays the same great songs too many times a day and you finally start disliking some of the great songs from hearing them too many times but, KLUV is still is a good radio station. It seems like they are starting to change to your direction.
Thanks for playing the great songs we don't hear everyday and letting me comment about your radio station and don't touch that dial.

Mike

93  Paula Jones on January 26, 2009 11:08 AM

I just happened upon your station a couple of months ago and before I heard any promo's I listened to the music and commented that this had to have something to do with Ron Chapman! Great selection! I have Platinum 96.7 on all my stations now and love the fact that there is not much talk and more incredible music. I only wish you could play a little jazz once and awhile. No jazz in the DFW area anymore and I miss that.
Ron, if you ever read these, you'll probably remember me as Cher too! Paula Jones from Arlington. I did a few "gigs" with you in the old days. Great hearing your voice (even in promo's) again. Say hello to Nancy for me.
Paula

94  julie mccamman on February 7, 2009 5:11 PM

Dear Folks at 96.7, WOW!!!! you have such a great station. We were in Plano, Texas at the end of January 2009, We are from the Los Angeles, California area. Sad to say we don't have a cool station like yours. As soon as we got back home I made sure I entered you on my favorites. Now as I'm writing you this note I'm listening to your groovy music. Thanks, our visit to Texas was more pleasent because of you. Julie and Bob McCamman, from Monrovia, california. Bye...Y'all...

I agree with most of the others on here, You guys are great !

I like the fact that you dare to play the B side sometimes.
Ya, I remember RECORDS. haha !

Keep up the good work, and don't change, like all of the other OLDIE stations have.

How about some "New Colony Six" ? When I hear them on your station, I will KNOW you are #1.

Thanks for what you have done so far,

98  Ed on March 3, 2009 3:09 AM

your music is wonerful - and so much of it. i don't know how you make money, but if it means more commercials to keep you on the air, its ok with me. please don't quit, just do what it takes to continue to broadcast.

103  Sad Listener on June 15, 2009 12:09 PM

Gail Lightfoot has a horrendous voice for radio. The music is fabulous, but I can't bare to listen to the voice - no inflection, no nothing. Can't you do better than that?

104  Sandee on July 16, 2009 10:56 AM

I really enjoy listening to this station - luv the format, personalities, etc. Have been trying to listen for the past year. But, I don't know if it is you or my equipment - reception is terrible a good percentage of the time. It doesn't matter if I am listening in my car, from the radio at my office, or online - at random times during my listening pleasure - I get bleed-thru or so much static it is impossible to listen. Please check into this matter for us...

105  Pam Meepe on August 2, 2009 6:05 PM

Thank you! Thank you! for bringing the forgotten "oldies" to life. Enjoyed your show today ~ great selection.I LOVE listening to Platinum @ home and while driving. PLEASE don't change. Keep up the good work!!

Pam

106  Michael on August 19, 2009 10:10 PM

I was a KLUV listener since 1983. I like classic Rock N Roll, Doo Wop , Soul & R&B and especially Elvis. It got to where they played the same songs over and over and the only Elvis from the 70's was Burning Love yet Elvis has a great catalog of 70's songs. It also got to where KLUV DJ's went from honoring Elvis to making fun of him. Something I would expect from a station that DOESN'T PLAY ELVIS. It also seems like KLUV is changing their format and moving into the 80's music real heavy and getting more away from the 50's classics. Since I discovered Platinum 96.7, I no longer listen to KLUV. PLATINUM has my attention. PLEASE PLAY MORE 70'S ELVIS PLATINUM!!!

107  Robbie S. Norris on September 5, 2009 1:20 PM

Went to a garage sale the other day and they had a big "boom box" for sale and it was tuned to 96.7, playing "earth angel"......oooooh did it take me back. I searched the boom box and found out the station number and immediately pluged it into my car stereo. It is wonderful, sorry I did not know about it sooner. Hooray for 96.7 and Ron Chapman.
Robbie

108  kimberly on October 27, 2009 11:17 AM

I was in TX recently and found your radio station by accident. I loved it and was so excited thinking I could listen online. I live in FL and travel all over the country- I can't listen online!! Help!

109  Leota on March 12, 2010 5:04 PM

I am very disappointed that Platinum 96.7 went off the air today. It was a great station and I really enjoyed it. When I called the station I was told it was a "corporate" decision to change the format. Such a shame that "corporate" people have to change things that are so good.

110  Heather on March 13, 2010 4:07 PM

The saddest thing happened yesterday. The BEST oldies station in Dallas/Ft. Worth changed it's format to something really unlistenable. Can't believe it!
Now we're stuck with the boring KLUV and the unbearable DJ's yammering. Their music is so repetitive and mostly of the same type. Dallas/Ft. Worth is a terrible venue for radio unless you like country. UGH!

111  sandy on March 15, 2010 12:26 AM

Why would "Corporate" change something that everybody liked. How stupid is that. I literally hate what you did to my favorite radio station. I'll miss it terribly!

112  Beverly on March 16, 2010 10:47 AM

I am totally devastated that 96.7 oldies went off of the air! That was the greatest station ever and now we have talk radio in its place? Sometimes corporate america make the dumbest calls.

113  Catherine Edwards on March 16, 2010 2:00 PM

Where did you go? I hate this new news crap-I get that on KRLD. Where is Larry Dixon going to land on his feet? I will follow him to any radio station.

114  Eva on March 16, 2010 7:32 PM

why would somebody change something that worked. This was the only station I listened to. I even had my grandchildren listening to 96.7. My youngest grandson is 28 months and he even tried to sing along with me when traveling in the car. This really sucks. 96.7 did not have songs that had dirty lyrics on the songs. Does anybody know of a different station I can listen to.

115  Mike on March 17, 2010 12:34 AM

What's the point of a simulcast? Who the heck is going listen to programming on AM when they can get the same thing on crystal clear FM? With that said, how 'bout moving Platinum to 820 AM? Better than nothing, I say.

116  john gravely on March 18, 2010 12:31 PM

I loved 96.7 . Please bring it back. I don't get it you are broadcasting the same thing on 820 am at the same time, what in the world is up with that.
If you are going to broadcast the same thing at the same time you at least should let the listeners of the old 96.7 listen to it on 820 am or give us back are old 96.7. why do you broadcast the same thing on 820 am and 96.7 fm. Waiting for an explanation on that one. Tks please bring the old 96.7 back.

117  Minh on March 22, 2010 9:05 AM

I accidently discover the 96.7 oldies a few months ago and loved it. This is the only station I listen to and listen all days without tiring. It was a bad decision to change it. Is there another similar one?

118  Erin on March 22, 2010 4:36 PM

I cannot believe the absolutely best oldies station is no longer. I am heart broken!!!!
What am I suppose to do now, please help. Have you all moved? This is insane to move from feeling good with some obscure 70's song to news and Rush L., yuk!!! Not a good idea. We all have enough stress in our lives as it is to hear his negative comments.

119  WBAP seriously!? on March 24, 2010 6:41 PM

come on! that was a one-of-a-kind station that EVERYONE enjoyed, a lot more than Twister, and you HAD to RUIN it!!!! That station was definately my favorite. wbap was my favorite talk station. Not any more! KLUV is great, but it stood no chance against Platinum! Give it back! AM stations have longer range anyway! We have NPR for crystal-clear talk! One is enough! This sucks....

120  Desiree on March 25, 2010 1:07 PM

I'm shocked this station disappeared suddenly and miss the music.

I REALLY want it back...

I just can't believe this!

121  Lori on March 26, 2010 10:38 PM

I couldn't believe it when I got in my car to hear my favorite radio station and it was no longer there. I was completely bummed out. The only great station we've had in the area in a long, long time. And they played my beloved John Denver. Please let me know if there is something else out there like it.

122  Mary on March 27, 2010 1:33 PM

When I took my husband to the hospital for major surgery last month we were listening to 96.7 to help us relax but now when we go somewhere we have noting to listen to. We use to listen to KLUV but it is not as good as Platium 96.7. It is sad that you have made this decision to change from oldies music to all talk. It is a shame that you let a good thing get out of your hands that a lot of people enjoyed. Now we have nothing to lisiten to.

123  Larry Mathewson on March 30, 2010 11:37 AM

you blew alot of money switching to talk radio. If I want talk I listen to politicans. If I want music, I would listen to 96.7; now I listen to 98.7, What were you thinking? I will not listen to a station run by bozo the clown.

124  Larry H. on April 10, 2010 2:04 AM

I was so glad when 96.7 KPMZ Platinum starting playing so many of my old favorites. It was definitely better than other "oldies" stations. Now it is gone and I am very sad. I will not listen to the current 96.7. If I want news, I can always change to KRLD or WBAP. Is there any chance of getting the Platinum oldies back?

About The Infinite Dial

We are fans of great radio, whether it be on AM, FM, Satellite, Internet, HD, a Podcast, in any country on earth, or on any platform. The Infinite Dial will explore, analyze, and keep you informed about all the intersections of broadcast media and technology.
